Record Geek Heaven: Beach House “Teen Dream”

Sub Pop 2010

I realize this review is coming a bit late. Not only was “Teen Dream” officially released in January, but it leaked onto the internet back in November. Even then, people were already blowing it up by word of mouth. I was impressed that so many people were talking about the record several months before its release, but being who I am, I also have to reserve some skepticism for those situations. I mean, seriously—Public Enemy was right when they said “Don’t believe the hype”. If you’re not careful, you can get tangled in that web pretty easily and might even totally forget what really turns you on musically. Read the rest of this entry >>

Record Geek Heaven: Rogue Wave “Permalight”

Brushfire 2010

Zach Rogue might have made believers out of many—including myself—with the debut Rogue Wave release, “Out of the Shadow”, but this has backfired on his band somewhat. The greatness of that first album, with its straight-from-the-bedroom quality, was apparently not well representative of Rogue’s intended direction for the Wave. The next two albums stray further from the feel of the first, yet they still retain the vulnerable whimsy that made Rogue’s songwriting stand out in the first place. Read the rest of this entry

Thanks to JayRock and show this Friday

February 25th, 2010

jojojayrock2010First off, we want to thank everyone involved with the JayRock 2010 concert. We had an awesome time and shot some pretty funny footage you’ll be seeing soon. Playing with Thieves and Generationals was great too and we’re always happy to play for the JayDoc Free Clinic in KC! This photo was taken by kickass concert photographer Brandon Cummins at the show.

On Friday Feb. 26, we will rock The Beaumont Club in Kansas City with some old friends. Pomeroy is headlining and Anything But Joey is doing a reunion show. Opening the bill is Steve Ewing, who used to play with St. Louis-based band The Urge.

We’ll be playing lots of new stuff from our upcoming LP “Out of Earshot” (on Rocket Heart Records)and we’ll also be taping for our new web series, which you’ll be seeing soon. So if you come to the show, prepare to be accosted by Eric and a camera. He might ask you some uncomfortable questions.

Record Geek Heaven: Bettie Serveert “Pharmacy of Love”

Second Motion Records 2010

Holland’s Bettie Serveert are troopers, man. They have been around for years, stubbornly putting out records for a public whose interest has been steadily waning. This makes me happy, though–it’s a true sign that you really can’t keep a good tune down. Maybe that’s why “Pharmacy of Love” was made in the first place. Read the rest of this entry

Record Geek Heaven: Shout Out Louds “Work”

Merge 2010

“1999″, the first song on the third full-length release from Sockholm’s Shout Out Louds, is not a cover. I didn’t really think it would be, but with all these bands out there doing covers these days, it wouldn’t have surprised me all that much if the SOL’s had chosen to open “Work” with a Cure-and-Smiths-influenced rendition of Prince’s classic party tune. I’m not sure why I have taken so long to write anything about this record. I have listened to it way more than any other album that has come out in 2010 thus far–WAY more. In fact, I don’t think I have listened to an album all the way through as many times as “Heartland” in a very long time. Read rest of entry

Live Performance of New Song from Afentra’s Big Fat Morning Buzz

February 10th, 2010

deadgirlspromo1

The Dead Girls were privileged to be invited to play on Afentra’s Big Fat Morning Buzz this morning. We ended up doing a quick interview and playing one song around 8:30 am, which is too early for most of us to think, let alone play music.

Fortunately, it went really well, and both Afentra and Jeriney were super cool to help us promote the JayRock Benefit Concert for the JayDoc free clinic, which is taking place at the Uptown Theater this Friday, February 12th (we’ll be playing with KC’s Thieves and New Orleans’ Generationals). A huge thanks to both of them and to everyone up at 96.5 for a great and rocking morning!

Click HERE to hear our live-in-the-studio rendition of “You Ignited”, from our forthcoming new record Out Of Earshot!

Dead Girls rock with Thieves and Generationals for a good cause

January 29th, 2010

untitled-1The JayDoc free health clinic in Kansas City rules. It’s as simple as that.

Last year, Ultimate Fakebook rocked the Uptown Theater for the JayRock benefit with The Republic Tigers, and this year its The Dead Girls.

On February 12 at the Uptown Theater, we’ll be playing with two awesome bands, New Orleans’ Generationals and KC rockers Thieves.

We’ll be playing lots of new songs from our upcoming 2010 LP “Out of Earshot” (we swear it’s coming out in two months!) and we’ll be raising money for a great cause.

Together, rock will do what the politicians cannot seem to do and help provide free healthcare for people in KC who really need it. The show starts at 7pm and it will be the coolest thing you’ll do all month. Come out and say “hi”!

Here’s the link to buy tickets and to the Facebook event page. The JayRock Twitter account is here. Spread the word. Invite everyone you know and we’ll see you there!

Thank you for voting for us to open for KISS!

December 14th, 2009

the dead girls and kiss 12.10.09I just wanted to say a quick than you to everyone out there who voted for The Dead Girls to open up for KISS last Thursday at the Sprint Center. The show was absolutely amazing and KISS and their crew were very cool and helpful all day. (I’m working on a blog about it right now, but am worried it may be overkill right now…)

Since I’ve been obsessed with the band ever since I was six years old (They are pretty much the reason I started playing drums in the first place), it was a pretty big deal to me. So again, thank you to all our friends and fans, 101 the Fox for selecting us as a finalist, and KISS themselves for being so hospitable.

Here’s a photo we took with the band in full make-up minutes before they took the stage. Click here to go to my Facebook page and see a chronological slide show of our amazing day opening for KISS.

thanks again!
Eric

Help The Dead Girls open for KISS in Kansas City–WE NEED YOUR VOTES!!!

December 2nd, 2009
The Dead Girls love KISS (this isn't really them, though)

The Dead Girls love KISS (this isn't really them, though)

I have been playing music in some capacity for about fifteen years now, and especially in these times of economic hardship, I have found myself wondering why more than once. A lot of the time, it’s a ton of hard work for very little payoff. But, I knew that going into it, and whenever I find I am beating myself up about the choices I’ve made, I ask myself, “What did you expect? That you would open for KISS someday or something?”

Never in my wildest dreams did I actually think this would be a possibility. But, as of last night, that possibility has materialized.

When 101 The Fox, a classic rock station (sorry…THE classic rock station) in Kansas City, announced their “Open For Kiss” contest, I had no idea it was even a thing. I was still trying to figure out how to win some free tix to the show, because my friend Eric (notorious KISS superfan and Dead Girls drummer) had done this through another radio contest that involved writing an essay about why you love KISS and sending in a photo that was KISS related. Thankfully, Eric had some fake blood on hand (fresh from his appearance at the Air Guitar National Championships in DC), doused his tongue in it, and took a picture of himself in front of his velvet KISS…now how would he NOT win that competiton?

Gene is Eric's favorite

Gene is Eric's favorite

So imagine the possibilities when this same guy hears about this OTHER radio contest, except this one involves having your BAND OPEN FOR KISS. Eric’s tenacity (which is fueled by KISS like a junkie’s joneses are fueld by smack) is one that is hard to match, and usually impossible not to notice. He sent a demo of our song “Last Words”, and the contest folks loved it. All of a sudden, holy SHIT dude, we could open for KISS?!?!?

Like a lot of the contests and shindigs we get involved in, our winning–our ability to share the stage with these rock gods–depends solely on the amount of votes we can gather up on the 101 The Fox website. You all have been amazing about voting for us in these contests, as we have won many of them, and it is continually appreciated by all of us. But, if you have helped us at all in the past, PLEASE don’t hesitate to help us this time. Using words I’m sure Gene Simmons has used at some point in his life, “This is the BIG ONE.”

Visit the 101 The Fox Website to VOTE for THE DEAD GIRLS today, and thank you all!
