The Dead Girls w/ The Sexy Accident, Air Wave the Messenger
The Brick, 1727 McGee, Kansas City, Mo.
Review by Pete Dulin. The title track “Hair Trigger” demonstrates the bravado of Hawk and Longbottom leading on guitar as Melin lays out a hard-pounding rhythm on drums. Within the space of three-and-a-half minutes, the guys mark their territory with well-placed guitar licks and power vocals that push harmony to the forefront.

New review in the Pitch today! Click here for full review and mp3 of “Tied to the Tracks.”
It seems Lawrence’s the Dead Girls (formerly Dead Girls Ruin Everything) have already taken Obama’s message of change to heart. Most obvious, of course, is the lopped-off moniker, but perhaps more significant is the Hair Trigger EP, the band’s first album in three years, and the first of three planned releases for 2009. Whereas the band’s previous full-length, What a Perfect Ending, was a frequently unpredictable mass of pop-rock energy, Trigger is a much more refined sugar. The vigor is still there, but cleaner production, subtle harmonies and a few softer edges on the instrumentation – especially in the full, rich acoustic guitars – prove that these boys can clean up nice. If this EP is any indication, the Dead Girls’ maturation is a change we can believe in. – Aaron Ladage

Hello all of you rockers! JoJo from the Dead Girls here. So tonight is the night, as the great Neil Young said. The night you can see the Dead Girls live at the Replay, celebrating the release of the Hair Trigger EP.
But this won’t be your typical Dead Girls show. Don’t worry, they’ll be plenty of guitar-driven rock songs and vociferous drums, but there will be one thing missing; my index finger. Unfortunately, I am a moron. In my moronical morning state about a week ago, I was making fun of my brother for having joked around with his finger and a hand-held juicer blender the night before. In the middle of my charade, while still wiping the slip from my eyes, the juicer came to life and took the tip of my index finger as its first victim. You can see the photo at the bottom of this post, but I warn you, they are not for the squeamish. (more…)

The Hair Trigger EP
The Dead Girls
The Hair Trigger
The best and possibly the worst attribute of a pop song is that catchy, predictable hook that stays in your head. Throw in some ear-bending guitar riffs and steady rhythms and you have The Hair Trigger, a new EP from Lawrence band The Dead Girls, previously known as Dead Girls Ruin Everything.
With each falsetto vocal and syncopated beat, The Dead Girls convey a level of proficiency and sincerity that the national pop scene lacks. The band’s experience shines through each of the album’s six tracks. The dueling guitars and harmonizing vocals of Podstar veterans JoJo Longbottom and Cameron Hawk combine with the rhythmic precision of drummer Eric Melin and bassist Nick Colby, both of the recently reunited Ultimate Fakebook. Each member of this quartet brings serious musical ability mixed with an added bonus of boyish fun. (more…)

If the Replacements are the guys who sang about Alex Chilton, then the Dead Girls are the guys who sang about the Replacements singing about Alex Chilton. She likes ‘Alex Chilton’ more than anything I’ve ever written, sings Dead Girl JoJo Longbottom, shouting out the seminal song on the ‘Mats Pleased to Meet Me album. There are plenty of third-generation influences coursing through the Girls’ new Hair Trigger EP, but they’re so spot-on that it’s hard to find fault. “Coming on Strong” is a fat slice of toe-tapping pop out of the Teenage Fanclub songbook, while “Sound the Alarm” nicks a few tricks from the XTC catalog. It’s a promising start to the year for the Dead Girls (formerly Dead Girls Ruin Everything), who plan to release another EP and a full-length before the 2010 ball drops.

Hey there kids, Cameron of the Dead Girls here. I wanted to express my ever-heightening excitement about the Dead Girls Project and thank all of you for checking it out. My favorite thing about it is that it’s not just about us–it’s about what people are doing in their musical lives, whether that be in local communities, bands, or at home writing or recording alone.
On that note, a huge part of my musical life is writing about what I listen to. I am constantly writing blogs, record reviews, lists, etc. about music I hear throughout the year, which I will posting on the Project site from now on. It’s just kind of what I do, and I do a lot of it, so…here I go!
Cheers,
Cameron

I listened to a lot of music this year. A whole hell of a lot. More than probably anyone would ever want to listen to in an entire lifetime. Much of it, I didn’t care for, even though I very rarely play an album just once. In the end, it’s gratifying for me, and kind of fun. Believe me, this is about as crazy as I get…
Before I move along, I want to mention that I wrote this list and first published it on my Record Geek Heaven blog towards the end of December. I still feel good about most of it, but if I could do it again, I would definitely replace Attic Lights with Deerhunter’s “Microcastle”. Cheers!

Full text/podcast with tracks from the Hair Trigger EP here.
If there is a God, he/she must not be a fan of power pop. Otherwise, Dead Girls Ruin Everything wouldn’t have lost half a record to a careless intern with a trigger-happy delete finger – and very nearly lost their minds in the process.
Instead of throwing in the towel and going to Arby’s, the band responded by redoubling its efforts and knocking out 20-plus songs. Change was in the air, and the group was no longer in the mood to “Ruin Everything.” Hence, The Dead Girls kick off 2009 with a new name and a new EP. It’s the start of what figures to be a very busy year, with another EP and a full-length to follow. The band will also be firing up “The Dead Girls Project”—an interactive website wherein fans can remix new material.
Eric Melin, Nick Colby, JoJo Longbottom and Cameron Hawk stopped by to share tracks from The Hair Trigger EP and discuss the fine art of 5-for-$5 economics.
