The Dead Girls and Erik Voeks Live at The Brick 9/4/2010

Monday, September 6th, 2010

Here is a recently uploaded YouTube video of The Dead Girls backing up Erik Voeks, creator of the 1993 power pop classic Sand Box (I posted a link to the album on this blog–find it here.) The show took place last Saturday at The Brick and was part of the Indie Pop Alliance series, which is becoming a very cool thing all around. We did three songs with Voeks (“pronounced VAKES, like SHAKE and BAKE”):

“Throw Me Out A Line”, from a single released on Bus Top Records.

“My Dentist” and “Finger-Painted Cat” from Sand Box.

A big thanks to Erik Voeks for letting us do this, and for making such great music. Cheers!

Rockville 1993

In 1993, Erik Voeks released an album called Sand Box. (Read my review of it here.) It’s one of those many great records that slipped through the cracks over the years, but has remained championed by a small and fortunate few. Fortunate enough to hear it, that is. Voeks recorded the album in St. Louis, the city in which he used to live, and it features some stellar guitar work from the late, legendary Jay Bennett (Wilco, Titanic Love Affair).

Since then, Voeks has relocated to Kansas City. In addition to a variety of projects that include a meticulously faithful Guided by Voices tribute band, he also started his own band, Miss America. My friend Randy Paske turned me on to Sand Box, and I was like “Who IS this guy?”, and Randy told me the story, while also throwing in the fact that Voeks is an appreciator of my band, The Dead Girls. Right away, I started thinking, “Man, some of those Sand Box tunes would be really fun to play live…”

Now, in partial thanks to Randy, Jesse Kates of the Sexy Accident and Indie Pop Alliance, and Voeks himself, this little party is coming to fruition tomorrow night at the Brick for the next Indie Pop Alliance show. Along with Atlantic Fadeout, Making Movies, and the Sexy Accident, Erik Voeks will perform songs from Sand Box with The Dead Girls as his backing band. Voeks will also be performing solo as well.

If you haven’t been fortunate enough to hear Voeks yet, I am doing you all a favor—here is a download of Sand Box. Please, listen to it, love it, and come out tomorrow (Saturday, Sept. 4) to hear some of these songs live, Voeks/Dead Girls style!

Someone Still Love You Boris Yeltsin/ The Dead Girls rock together, walk together

Friday, June 4th, 2010

Springfield, Mo’s Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin is one of the most celebrated indie rock bands around today. Their sound has all the sunny and breezy aspects of West Coast bands, combined with that unbeatable, wide-eyed Midwest perspective. Their second album, 2008′s Pershing, won countless year-end accolades, and in August they will release a third album co-produced by Death Cab for Cutie’s Chris Walla.

We just released a new LP/digital download called “Out of Earshot” on Rocket Heart Records. This new album presents the tightest, catchiest, and most unstoppable rock we’ve made thus far.

Come to The Record Bar in Kansas City Saturday night June 5 at 6pm for an early all ages show!!! Sam Billen opens at 6pm.

Thanks to JayRock and show this Friday

Thursday, February 25th, 2010

jojojayrock2010First off, we want to thank everyone involved with the JayRock 2010 concert. We had an awesome time and shot some pretty funny footage you’ll be seeing soon. Playing with Thieves and Generationals was great too and we’re always happy to play for the JayDoc Free Clinic in KC! This photo was taken by kickass concert photographer Brandon Cummins at the show.

On Friday Feb. 26, we will rock The Beaumont Club in Kansas City with some old friends. Pomeroy is headlining and Anything But Joey is doing a reunion show. Opening the bill is Steve Ewing, who used to play with St. Louis-based band The Urge.

We’ll be playing lots of new stuff from our upcoming LP “Out of Earshot” (on Rocket Heart Records)and we’ll also be taping for our new web series, which you’ll be seeing soon. So if you come to the show, prepare to be accosted by Eric and a camera. He might ask you some uncomfortable questions.

Live Performance of New Song from Afentra’s Big Fat Morning Buzz

Wednesday, February 10th, 2010

deadgirlspromo1

The Dead Girls were privileged to be invited to play on Afentra’s Big Fat Morning Buzz this morning. We ended up doing a quick interview and playing one song around 8:30 am, which is too early for most of us to think, let alone play music.

Fortunately, it went really well, and both Afentra and Jeriney were super cool to help us promote the JayRock Benefit Concert for the JayDoc free clinic, which is taking place at the Uptown Theater this Friday, February 12th (we’ll be playing with KC’s Thieves and New Orleans’ Generationals). A huge thanks to both of them and to everyone up at 96.5 for a great and rocking morning!

Dead Girls rock with Thieves and Generationals for a good cause

Friday, January 29th, 2010

untitled-1The JayDoc free health clinic in Kansas City rules. It’s as simple as that.

Last year, Ultimate Fakebook rocked the Uptown Theater for the JayRock benefit with The Republic Tigers, and this year its The Dead Girls.

On February 12 at the Uptown Theater, we’ll be playing with two awesome bands, New Orleans’ Generationals and KC rockers Thieves.

We’ll be playing lots of new songs from our upcoming 2010 LP “Out of Earshot” (we swear it’s coming out in two months!) and we’ll be raising money for a great cause.

Together, rock will do what the politicians cannot seem to do and help provide free healthcare for people in KC who really need it. The show starts at 7pm and it will be the coolest thing you’ll do all month. Come out and say “hi”!

Here’s the link to buy tickets and to the Facebook event page. The JayRock Twitter account is here. Spread the word. Invite everyone you know and we’ll see you there!

Here is a video shot by Pitch.com’s Nick Spacek of The Dead Girls covering “Don’t Change” by INXS. We opened for Brendan Benson at The Bottleneck last Saturday, and Mr. Spacek was there to review the show. Read his review HERE. Thanks to all who came out and rocked that night!

A 3-piece style “Hair Trigger” live @ RecordBar 10/2/09

Wednesday, November 4th, 2009

JoJo decided he needed to flee to Spain to visit his beloved (see the track “Te Quiero”), but having one (or even two members) missing has never stopped The Dead Girls before. On this night of the second of October, on the occasion of the Present Magazine Anniversary Bash at RecordBar, no exceptions were made. This is us rocking “Hair Trigger” in true stripped-down fashion. Fun stuff!
