The English fancy the Dead Girls´thirst and Spanish solidarity!

Sunday, June 27th, 2010

3 worlds collided when an English heart-throb columnist came to meet JoJo and his brother Jon (aka Joe Joe & Johnny) at a bar tucked away in the center of Valencia, Spain during the World Cup match between the US and the heavily favored Brits of England. Somewhere amidst the swilling of quadruple whiskeys, drunken national anthems, and the sweet seranades of “A Candle in the Wind” to the pissed off Englishmen (following the unexpected draw between the two teams), she got an idea for her newest column. Check out “An English Girl in Spain” and her impressions of Americans (a scary thought when being based on the likes of any member of the Dead Girls) and Spanish comradery.

Justin Pierre from Motion City Soundtrack

Justin Pierre from Motion City Soundtrack

Justin Pierre, the singer for our pals Motion City Soundtrack, was in town on Sunday promoting the band’s forthcoming album on Columbia Records. He taped an on-camera movie review with Eric for Scene-Stealers.com and spent the middle part of the day in The Dead Girls’ exclusive basement studio.

Why, you may ask?

Why not? We decided to try and write and record a song from the ground up in five hours and that’s exactly what we did.

Our good friend J.D. Warnock (The Blackpool Lights, Ultimate Fakebook, The Creature Comforts) also joined us and Lawrence studio whiz Steve Squire engineered this whirlwind recording session.

After arranging a couple of riffs, everybody instinctively worked together assemble the pieces into a song. After one live take, Justin and Cameron wrote some quickie lyrics and recorded vocal parts. Add a little Warnock backup sauce, and we’re good to go. Squire did an amazing job making it NOT sound like it was recorded in a basement, and we were good to go. Since we don’t really know what to do with it, we’ll just out it here for you to listen to for now. Enjoy and Happy Thanksgiving!

The new EP, released 5/5/09

The new EP, released 5/5/09

As most of you hopefully know, we’ll be throwing a CD release in Kansas City this Friday (well, tomorrow, actually) May 15th at the Brick. Tim Finn at the Kansas City Star did a sweet little write-up about it–check it out HERE.

This is what he said:

DEAD GIRLS RISE AGAIN WITH NEW EP

One of our area’s ultimate pop bands is throwing a Kansas City release party for its latest project.

On Friday night, the Dead Girls (who used to be Dead Girls Ruin Everything) will officially present “Te Quiero,” the second six-track EP the band has released this year. The other: “Hair Trigger,” came out in February.

3 Fingers and NO Brains!

Saturday, February 7th, 2009

finger-0011Hello all of you rockers! JoJo from the Dead Girls here. So tonight is the night, as the great Neil Young said. The night you can see the Dead Girls live at the Replay, celebrating the release of the Hair Trigger EP.

But this won’t be your typical Dead Girls show. Don’t worry, they’ll be plenty of guitar-driven rock songs and vociferous drums, but there will be one thing missing; my index finger. Unfortunately, I am a moron. In my moronical morning state about a week ago, I was making fun of my brother for having joked around with his finger and a hand-held juicer blender the night before. In the middle of my charade, while still wiping the slip from my eyes, the juicer came to life and took the tip of my index finger as its first victim. You can see the photo at the bottom of this post, but I warn you, they are not for the squeamish. (more…)
